Juan Alberto's story

Juan Alberto L. F., 55, is married and joyful to have four children between the ages of 26 and 32 years, two of them twins. He is a man who 20 years ago learned how to make men’s clothing like pants, shirts and blouses, in a family workshop. Gradually he has moved into working independently with help from his sister who has been a very good collaborator.

Currently he is very well known in his area, La Playa, where he lives with his wife. He has a good number of customers and contracts thanks to the excellent quality of the clothing items he manufactures.

Because Juan Alberto is a man with many ideas a year ago he acquired three washing machines with profits from his sewing because he recognized a new way to earn income for his family by providing a service that would make housewives’ work easier: washing machine rentals. He has done quite well with this new business because he has little competition in this area.

He needs a Kiva loan, his third loan with Fundación Mario Santo Domingo, because the end of year festivities are approaching and he must be prepared to make the more elegant items his customer families will require. He needs to buy fabric and sewing supplies as well as to buy three more washing machines for his other business.

Juan Alberto has noticed changes in his business since becoming affiliated with Fundación Mario Santo Domingo a little more than two years ago. For example, his profits have increased and with them he was able to buy a motorcycle that generates still more income because he offers transportation services. He created another business: the washing machine rental services and he has also been able to buy larger amounts of raw materials and supplies he would not have been able to do on his own.

His dream now is to have a boutique where his own clothing creations may be displayed.
