María Magdalena's story

María Magdalena M. is a member of the El Tocte community bank. She lives in the Vegaspamba community which belongs to the Jadan parish. The majority of its people raise animals and work in agriculture. They also leave for the city to work in different areas such as construction, in factories, etc. Maria is 43, married and has 7 children ages 26, 22, 21, 19, 17, 15 and 13. Her three oldest children are married, but her married daughter lives with her and shares costs. Her 19 and 17 year-old children work and help with the household costs. Her two youngest children are in school. Her husband is a master builder and working together has allowed them to build their own home. Maria has worked as a maid for 6 months. She works 3 days a week without a fixed schedule. On the other days she works in her greenhouse which she has had for two and a half years, where she sows tomatoes. She also raises guinea pigs, hogs and hens for consumption or sells them when she has any economic need. She is a borrower who has strong friendships with all of the other bank members. This is her seventh loan and she will invest it in the purchase of tomato plants for her greenhouse.
