Andrew is an active member and treasurer of Nkumari Group which is being funded by Juhudi Kilimo. He has been farming for the past 6 years and has employed 2 casual labourers. His main products are bananas and milk which he sells through middlemen and through the Imenti Dairy Society respectively. He also earns income from his commercial buildings at a local market and rental houses.
Andrew fully repaid his previous loan from Juhudi and has requested this loan of 50,000 KES to construct a zero-grazing shed. He says that the income from his farming will help pay college fees for one of his children. His primary challenges are high prices for dairy feed, high cost of labour, and insufficient water for irrigation.
In future, he intends to replace his current dairy cows with high yielding dairy cows and expand his banana plantation from the current 2 acres to 3 acres. He is happy with the services he has been getting from Juhudi. He says that Juhudi is the true financier of farmers.
Andrew is 62 years old. He is married with 7 children who are all adults.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
