A loan of $1,875 helped a member buy a sewing machine for tailoring business.

Mujeres Emprendedoras Group's story

Sra. Mercedes, 54, is married with 3 children. She is a member of the Mujeres Emprendedoras community group, an association of seven people from the San Juan Bautista neighborhood of Lima. Her fellow members chose her to be the secretary of the group. Sra. Mercedes operates a tailoring business. She started 20 years ago with a sewing machine that her husband gave her, making skirts and blouses for friends and family. She liked the work so much that she took a course to learn to make clothes which, in turn, inspired her to set up her own tailoring business, counting on her husband's support all the while. She has now updated her workshop--which is located in her house--and has extra helpers when she has a lot of orders. Sra. Mercedes will use this loan to buy a new sewing machine that will allow her to do even more elaborate work than before.
