With that work experience, when Consuelo moved to her own house she decided to run her own small store from her home. She thought that this would allow her to work without neglecting her children, and it has worked out well for her.

Her best days in terms of sales are on the weekends. She sells all kinds of products but drinks and food items sell the best. Consuelo also has some additional income from renting out apartments on the second floor of her house. With the money she earns she is making some improvements to one of the units she will be renting out, and she also uses her income to support her children's education.

Consuelo would like to study cosmetology because her dream is to set up a beauty salon in one of the rooms of her house, which she is remodeling for that purpose. She will use this loan to make improvements to one of the apartments she rents out. Consuelo is the treasurer of the “Mujeres buscando un futuro” [Women looking for a future] group, which has 10 members.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
