Mariame's story

Mrs Mariame K. is a widow and mother of 8 children. She was born on April 18, 1957 in Bamako (capital of Mali). She lives with her children in the house of her deceased husband in the town of Loulouni .
She is a matron in the Community Health Centre of Loulouni, and for several years has also carried out income generating activities on the side, notably a business buying and selling firewood. She occasionally also sells kitchen utensils, cups, and loincloths. Quite experienced and much in demand, she bought a donkey and a cart, and rents the services of a cart driver to ensure transport and delivery of the firewood.
This is her fifteenth loan with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso. All her previous loans have been duly repaid.
She intends to use her loan to buy several cartloads of firewood each week. She gets her supplies from the villages neighbouring Loulouni.
She sells in retail or wholesale, cash or credit accepted, to a clientele of both men and women, and very often on order.
She envisages making a monthly profit of 120.000FCFA of which one part will be used to increase her business activity, and the other part will be put in savings in order to complete construction of her house.
