This photo was taken at the business of Esther N. B., who is the treasurer of the group “Las estrellas del sur” ["The Stars of the South"], located in Tehuacán, Puebla, Mexico. In the photo, we can see the materials she uses to prepare handmaD. tortillas, which she sells. She has operated this business for 4 years. Her customers say that they buy tortillas from Esther because they are maD. with natural ingredients and also because they are always nice and hot. The client [Esther] is very happy with her loan, because she likes the idea that someone has confidence in her and her fellow members. She is 36 years old, and she has only had the opportunity to study up to secondary school, but this has not stopped her from getting ahead. She is the mother of 4 children, two girls and two boys. With the loan, she plans to continue investing in her tortilla business and expanding her number of customers. In addition, with the funds she will contract other women to help her, and she will feel happy about this since she is generating more jobs, while also providing for her children's education so that they can learn a profession and have better opportunities in life.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
