A loan of $1,000 helped to develop her small clothing business.

Maria Mercedes's story

Maria Mercedes C. is 36 years old. She is married and she lives in the village of Guaranda in the province of Bolivar in Ecuador. She has an eleven-year old son.

Maria lives in the rural village of Gradas Chico, about a fifteen minute drive from the city of Guaranda. The group is made up of 20 members and the majority of them cultivate corn, wheat, and potatoes and raise livestock. This is the third loan they have requested.

Maria is an agriculturist but she also has a small store from where she sells clothing. She cultivates corn and some potatoes. She makes her purchases and carries out the sale of her products in the markets of Guaranda. She sells clothing in the plaza named 15 de Maya in Guaranda.

She requests a loan to restock her clothing business. Her dream is to keep developing her business and to send her son to school. She feels discouraged sometimes over the competition that she sees in her clothing business.

She doesn't have much spare time because there are always things to do in the home or in the fields.
