Digna Margarita's story

Señora Digna Margarita is a member of the Atenas community bank. She lives in Sidcay parish where the traditional work of the local people is agriculture and raising animals so they can be self-sufficient. They go to the city of Cuenca to find other sources of work.

Sra. Digna is 49 years old and lives with her common-law partner. She has eleven children: the four oldest are married and have left home, and her seven remaining children (aged 19, 17, 16, 15, 13, 9, and 8) are all students, five in secondary school and the two youngest in primary school. Digna’s husband works as a private employee. They don’t have a house of their own so they live in a house that someone has lent to them.

Digna looks after the household and also uses the time to make dusters (cloths for cleaning). She started doing this a year ago. She’s also had a business selling salchipapas (hot dogs and fried potatoes) in the community for six years.

This will be Digna’s fifth loan with Kiva partner Fundación Espoir. The loans have helped both her family and her business. The money from this new loan will be used to pay for her children’s education and also for fabric to make the dusters. Digna’s dream is to have a house of her own.
