A loan helped to increase yields of 1,000 indigenous organic cocoa farmers and provide jobs to workers from rural, low-income communities.

Kulkao's story

Kulkao is a Peruvian cocoa producer improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the Amazon where deforestation and poverty are threatening the ability of communities who have lived there for generations to remain there.

Kulkao sources cocoa beans from over 1,000 local cocoa smallholder farmers, helping them to access premium prices for their harvests. The social enterprise hires its employees directly from rural, low-income communities in San Martin, Ucayali, and Huánuco.

Kulkao’s deep commitment to sustainably produced organic products aligns with the values of indigenous communities. To ensure regenerative cocoa harvesting, Kulkao established a rigorous quality control process through its organic processing plant, limiting pesticide contamination by regularly monitoring farmlands. The social enterprise also provides farmers with technical support on organic farming and sustainable agriculture practices.

Your loan will enhance Kulkao’s organic cocoa production capacity. It will be repaid through the sale of its diverse line of products including cocoa butter, cocoa powder, and cocoa nibs that are sold to local and international markets such as Europe and North America.

This loan is special because:

It supports businesses that are too big for microfinance but too small for banks.
