A loan helped to build a semi-hydroponic greenhouse to allow him to produce veggies all-year-round.

Moisés's story

Moisés is a 51-year-old Mozambican man who has a plot in Manhiça District for production of veggies in a protected environment.

Two years ago, Moisés was introduced to iDE's SMART Project which is related to commercial horticulture as well as to the best practices of producing veggies in a protected environment.

To that end, Moisés requested his first Kiva loan to buy a tropicalized greenhouse which helped him to produce a variety of crops, mainly vegetables such as tomato, green pepper, cucumber, cabbage and lettuce. However, due to some soil diseases and the high costs of the chemicals to solve each plague, Moisés is considering acquiring some local equipment in order to upgrade the tropicalized greenhouse to a new, more efficient one.

For this reason, Moisés is requesting a second Kiva loan to build a semi-hydroponic greenhouse to allow him to produce veggies all-year-round.

This loan is special because:

It gives smallholder farmers access to productive equipment and new markets.
