A loan helped to buy more green bananas for resale.

Zakiya's story

Zakiya is 30 years old and lives in the town of Kalerwe in the Kawempe region of Uganda. She is married and has 5 children with 4 of them currently in school. For the past 2 years, Zakiya has been working hard to manage her grocery store, which sells raw green bananas.

To help expand her business, Zakiya has requested a loan of 2,200,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more green bananas for resale, and will help Zakiya to generate greater profits and improve on her family's standard of living by providing new clothes and food for her family. Zakiya hopes that in the future she will be able to build a house of her own.

Zakiya is a member of BRAC's microfinance program (MF). The program primarily serves small group members like Zakiya who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
