A loan helped two young black men sustain a record label centering black liberation and southern rap culture.

Jordan's story

Growing up in a predominantly African-American community in Atlanta, GA, I always stood out as a classically-trained percussionist. Classical music was my entryway into the lives of people who did not look like me, as well as to college institutions and programs that could better my social and financial position. However, while studying percussion at Boston University, the lack of response from the classical music community to the police killings of Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland made me realize that this was not the community for me. I began to channel my frustrations with these occurrences by writing my own music.

My percussion background combined with my southern roots made my switch to hip-hop songwriting and producing a natural transition. With encouragement from my peers, I released my first rap song in May 2016, and it received over 1,000 plays within the first hour. From that moment, I committed myself to becoming the next hip-hop superstar. Since then, I have built my fanbase by releasing music and even coordinated my own East Coast tour following the release of my second album titled, My Favorite Things 2. Most recently, with the help of my cousin and business partner, Jebril Reeves, I left my full-time arts administration position to focus solely on monetizing my skills as a musician and released my third album titled, Lincoln Terrace Park. Jebril is a corporate lawyer at a top-tier law firm in Manhattan and has supported me until we are able to secure financing to execute our record label business plan. We believe that the major label record deals are exploitative against musicians and do not reflect the values of black liberation and radical love present in my music; therefore we are seeking funding to operationalize our own record label, Too Solid Entertainment LLC.
