Artesanas De Puente De Amistad Group's story

Silvia, a 26-year-old married mother of 3 children (18 mos.-7 yrs), has developed a poultry business raising chickens and selling eggs in 3 nearby local markets. Her efforts are paying off and the business is growing and it is popular! She has a 4th grade education. Her goals are to expand the business even more and raise the standard of living of her family. And, of course, she wants her children to enjoy an education that will prepare them for the future. She is requesting her 1st Kiva loan to buy more hens and roosters.

Silvia has joined 8 other Maya K’iche ladies to participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational sessions and bi-monthly health care services. She is the Secretary of the Trust Bank that is called “Artesanas de Puente de Amistad” or “Artisans of Friendship Bridge. Their educational training sessions are centered around 4 topics including business, health, family and women. The interactive lessons about business help them with their corn farms and poultry businesses. These sessions are designed by a facilitator who speaks their Maya K’iche language.

These women understand the important role that they play in their rural community in the department/state of Quiche. They juggle family responsibilities with their work and strive to empower and educate themselves. Thank you, Kiva investors, for the vital role you play in their lives!
