The “El Progreso” Communal Bank is a group maD. up of 9 female members and one male member who all live in the same neighborhood. Having worked for almost 4 years with EDAPROSPO-PROSPERIDAD, they have formed a close friendship because they have helped each other out and become more active in the group.

Tina is 38 years old. She has 2 children that still depend on her and she lives with her husband in their own house. She sells fruit in the market that is close to her house. She rents a place in the market and since it is her own business she is able to act as the treasurer of the communal bank. She is very hardworking and enthusiastic, as are her fellow members of the communal bank. Tina leaves very early in the morning to go to a bus terminal that is far from her house to get the fruit in large quantities at a lower price so she can sell it in the market she works from. This is how she earns the money to proviD. for her family.

Tina dreams of seeing her children become professionals and of refurbishing her house.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
