A loan helped to pay for a borehole setting up that will help him to have water all year round.

Bernardo's story

Bernardo is a 45-year-old Mozambican entrepreneur working in commercial horticulture over 10 years.

Bernardo has been passionate about agriculture since early age, as he has learned with his parents the passion for agriculture. Later, he started to invest in his business by adopting affordable technologies such as hydroponic systems made with local materials.

In 2017, through iDE's horticulture pilot project, Bernardo had a chance to receive financial support through Kiva to buy three tropical greenhouses. The investment allowed Bernardo to produce more vegetables with high quality in a protected environment.

Despite the partial success in his business, Bernardo still faces some challenges related to the absence of a permanent source of water to ensure a good irrigation of the crops. Considering the high costs associated, Bernardo is now requesting a second Kiva loan to pay for setting up a borehole that will help him to have water all year round.

This loan is special because:

It gives smallholder farmers access to productive equipment and new markets.
