José Manuel's story

José Manuel Batín R. lives in Cartagena's Olaya Herrera neighborhood. He is a hard-working man who is always looking for ways to increase his income. He is a skilled construction worker but construction jobs are seasonal so he started a business selling a little of everything. He calls the business "Comercios punto Combo" (Merchandise-dot-Combo). You can see him every day on his bicycle, selling bread around the neighborhood and in the surrounding area, too. Along with that, he works every day selling the basic products that every household needs: bananas, pastas, potatoes, etc. He started the business with working capital that he borrowed from his family. He was selling cheese and dairy products then but, gradually, with loans from the Fundacion Mario Santo Domingo, he added other products and expanded his business to other parts of Cartagena. He has approached Kiva for a loan so that he can buy wholesale supplies of products such as bread, pinita and potato and banana fillings.
Jose Manuel is well known in the neighborhood and he has a lot of customers. He goals are to see his 2 children in good careers and to continue working with the Fundacion that has done so much to help him improve not only his business, but his house too. His biggest challenge is to grow his business so that he has his own shop and everything.
