A loan helped to buy more charcoal to sell.

Mercy's story

Mercy is 35 years old, from Liberia. She is a married mother with 3 children, who are in school and live at home. Mercy is a college student, and also sells charcoal. She has had this business for 11 years now and describes herself as a hardworking business woman. Her mother taught her how to sell.

Mercy faces no problem with her business and uses motor bike to transport supplies to and from her business site. She sells Monday through Saturday. To excel in business, she applied for a loan through BRAC Liberia, Kiva's field partner. This financing will be used to buy more charcoal to sell in order to repay her loan installment and increase her income. She is proud of her business because it helps to support her family.

In the future, Mercy wants to buy land and build houses for her children. Mercy is highly grateful for the financial support BRAC and Kiva have rendered.

This loan is special because:

It serves low-income individuals in rural Liberia where few alternative funding sources exist.
