Luz Mercedes's story

Luz Mercedes Calderón is a member of the communal bank, Sociedad 12 de Abril. She lives in the city of Cuenca, a city recognized for its architectural beauty and its historic center. It was named an UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 1, 1999. Its cuisine, its people, and its culture make this a lovely and warm city.

Luz Mercedes is 35 years old, married, and has three children aged 15, 13 and 9. Her oldest two children are in high school and her youngest is in elementary school. Her husband works as a longshoreman (dockhand). They don't own their own house, so they are renting one.

She works as a fruit and vegetable merchant, which she has done for 15 years. She has her own stand in El Mercado 12 de Abril (The 12th of April Market). She works from Sunday to Sunday (7 days a week) without taking a day off from 7 AM to 5 PM.

She is in her 5th loan cycle. She has invested the previous loans in her business. Her new loan will be used to buy more fruits and vegetables and to expand her business.

Her goal is to eventually own her own home.
