Unidas Somos Mas ( Cuenca ) Group's story

The community bank Unidas was formed by 9 women who fight day by day to better their economic situation and to improve the quality of life for their families. The majority of the members live in the Nonodel sector, some 30 minutes outside the city of Cuenca. They conduct their meetings in the countryside because their homes are not very accessible by car.

Miss Laura B. lives in Deleg canton. This is her first loan that she has used. She was invited by her aunt and now belongs to the community bank. She works cultivating the earth as a farm laborer. She is very young, only 19 years of age, is single and lives at the home of her sister sharing the expenses. Her loan will be invested in the purchase of livestock to start her own business. Her goal is to own her own home.

Ms Hilda B. lives in Deleg canton, is 26 years old, and is married with 4 children who are 10, 7, 5, and 2 years of age. Her first 3 children are going to the local school. Her husband works as a farm laborer. The do not have their own home, so they are renting. This member is also working as a farm laborer. She works every day Monday to Saturday, but she also takes time to care for the animals that she raises – guinea pigs and chickens. She sells them when she has economic need. This is her first loan that she is getting from the community bank. It will be invested to pay the down payment on some land that she is acquiring. Her dream is to own her own home.
