Clara Elizabeth
Clara Elizabeth V. A. is 26 years old. She is married and lives with her husband and three children, ages 1, 3, and 7, in the Ventanas hamlet, located in the Los Ríos province.

Clara is part of the “La Ventanilla Rural Recinto San Ramón,” which is located in Nuevo San Ramón, 12 kilometers from Ventanas. There are a total of 20 members who work in short cycle farming (harvest within six months of planting). This will be the first loan they obtain through the cooperative.

Clara raises corn and rice and makes her sales of rice and corn in Ventanas every six months. She is asking for this loan in order to buy seeds, and fertilizer. She believes that this loan will help her to be able to plant in the short cycles and that it is more feasible than other methods of finance that she has available to her. She wants to be able to help her children with their education.

She likes listening to music in her spare time.

About Cooperativa San Jose

This loan is administered by Cooperativa San Jose, a 45,000-member credit union located high in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador’s poorest province, Bolivar. They offer a unique loan called “Ventanillas Rurales” [Window to the Countryside], which uses a group guarantee but is an individual loan with a savings component, mostly to rural borrowers. Due to low savings rates and a history of macroeconomic instability, many traditional loans in Ecuador demand interest rates that are prohibitively high for some borrowers. There is also a high incidence of extortionist black-market lending in Ecuador. CSJ helps mitigate these problems by providing a less onerous and more appropriate option. Join CSJ’s Lending Team!
