Carlos Clemente
Carlos Clemente R. T. is 45 years old and lives in the Ventanas hamlet, located within the Los Ríos province. He has two children, ages 20 and 22.

Carlos is a member of the “La Ventanilla Rural Recinto San Ramón,” which is located in Nuevo San Ramón, 12 kilometers from Ventanas. There are a total of 20 members who work in short cycle farming (harvest within six months of planting). This will be the first loan they obtain through the cooperative.

Carlos works as a farmer, raising corn, rice, and cacao. He sells his products in Ventanas and Puerto Pechicho, every six months for the corn and rice, but only small quantities of cacao.

He is requesting this loan in order to work the summer season; to buy seed and fertilizer. He feels that this loan will be helpful because the interest rate is low and he will earn a good income. His dream is to leave something behind for his children and to be able to work more.

He likes to cook and rest in his spare time.

About Cooperativa San Jose

This loan is administered by Cooperativa San Jose, a 45,000-member credit union located high in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador’s poorest province, Bolivar. They offer a unique loan called “Ventanillas Rurales” [Window to the Countryside], which uses a group guarantee but is an individual loan with a savings component, mostly to rural borrowers. Due to low savings rates and a history of macroeconomic instability, many traditional loans in Ecuador demand interest rates that are prohibitively high for some borrowers. There is also a high incidence of extortionist black-market lending in Ecuador. CSJ helps mitigate these problems by providing a less onerous and more appropriate option. Join CSJ’s Lending Team!
