Massorie Progressive Union Group's story

Umu S. K. (pictured in the middle) is the leader of this group of entrepreneurs. Umu was born in Masorie village, which is about 32 miles from Makeni, in northern Sierra Leone. She is approximately 37 years old. Umu is married to a farmer and the couple has five children, two of whom are in primary school and two in secondary school. For many years now, Umu has been selling palm oil (the most popular cooking oil), rice and pepper. This is not the first loan that Umu and her group members have accessed from SMT/Kiva lenders. With the help of previous SMT/Kiva loans, they were able to expand their businesses, make more sales and consequently improve their living conditions. With the help of this loan, Umu will use her share (SLL 1,000,000) to expand her business. She will buy palm oil, rice and pepper at wholesale to add to her current stock.
