A loan of $4,625 helps a member to buy plastic material to fabricate more baskets to sell.

Los Encinos Group's story

Many Maya women who live in rural areas have home businesses that allow them to care for their children as well as their homes and earn income at the same time. This has been very important to Juana, a 32-year-old married mother of three children (seven,10, and 13). Part of her income from raising animals has been earmarked toward the education of her children.

Ten years ago, she was happy to find an additional way to raise income. She learned to make various sizes of woven recycled plastic baskets in many colors. This is a busy time of year for Juana and she has many orders. Therefore, she is requesting her fifth Kiva loan to buy plastic material to make more baskets.

“Los Encinos” or “The Oaks” is the name of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank that Juana and eight other Maya K’iche ladies have formed. They raise animals and poultry, and have convenience stores. They look forward to their monthly meetings when a facilitator offers educational training drawn from four topics: health, family, women, and business. Recent topics have included the importance of offering new products, improved business practices, and good hygienic practices. Every two months, the women have access to basic healthcare services. This useful combination of loans, education, and healthcare is called “Microcredit Plus.”

Thank you Kiva investors for lending a helping hand to Juana and her friends. You are much appreciated!
