A loan of $2,675 helps to buy mulberry for her tapa-making business and also to plow and plant her own mulberry plantation.

Maile's story

Maile is 47 years old. She is a mother to three, and a wife of a farmer. She applies for a loan to buy mulberry for her tapa-making business and also to plow a piece of land where she and her husband can plant her own mulberry plantation. They have only three sons, and they live in their own home. She may be in a wheelchair, but she can still manage her business well.

She joins a group of women in their village who make tapas and sell them to earn income for their families. Maile came up with the idea of planting her own mulberry plantation because she sees the expense she always has in buying mulberry from the market, for the seller rapidly increases the price for the mulberry. She also sees that if they plant her own mulberry plantation, not only will she have her own mulberry for free, but she can also sell mulberry bark to their tapa-making group.
