A loan of $2,300 helps to give maintenance to his 2.8 hectares of coffee.

Jairo Jose's story

Jairo, age 38, is a coffee grower who runs a small farm of 5.63 hectares, of which 2.8 are used for cultivating coffee. He had a reduction in his cultivation area because of the coffee rust he had in previous cycles.

He lives in a remote community of Nueva Segovia with his wife and two children. He has worked for over 10 years cultivating good quality coffee. Each year represents a challenge to overcome, and this was not the exception.

For this cycle, Jairo’s challenge is to implement a nutritional improvement plan for his coffee crops. This will allow him to increase his family’s incomes. The given loan will be used to buy calcium, zinc, boron, manganese, and others; and also to pay for labor for doing this maintenance.

This is the fourth loan that he requests to PAC.

Previous loan details

Jairo is a good humored farmer with a big vision. He says he inherited his passion for working in the fields from his parents. When he was young, they taught him to work the land.

His farm is 4.92 hectares, with 3.52 hectares used to plant and harvest coffee under the criteria of the FLO certification.

He lives in a remote community of Nueva Segovia, in Nicaragua, where he resides with his wife and two children.

Jairo inherited his farm 10 years ago. It is there that he grows export-quality coffee and is able to achieve excellent yield.

As part of the annual improvements on his farm, this year he will implement a nutritional improvement plan for his coffee trees. This is why he is requesting a loan that will help him buy seedlings and supplies, and pay for the labor to establish 1.4 hectares of coffee.

This is the second loan he has had with PAC.

Jairo is a 37-year-old farmer with good principles and a great vision. Since he was young, his parents taught him to work the earth, and to love it. His farm is 4.92 hectares, 3.52 of which are dedicated to growing coffee. With the technical assistance from PAC, he's implementing the criteria for FLO certification.

Vive en una alejada comunidad de Nueva Segovia con su esposa y dos hijos. Desde hace más de 10 años se dedica a la siembra y cosecha de café de calidad, cada año es un nuevo reto que cumplir, y este no era la excepción.

Para este ciclo, el reto de Jairo es la implementación de un plan de mejoramiento nutricional a sus árboles de café, el cual le permitirá incrementar los ingresos económicos de su familia. More about this loan

This loan is part of PAC's effort to help farmers expand their existing crop yields and increase their incomes. Coffee production loans help farmers increase their crop yields by enabling them pay to clean, prune, fertilize, and conserve their fields, deliver water, and replant trees needed to shade coffee plants. Farmers working with PAC also receive technical assistance and commercial services, as well as access to Fair Trade and organic certifications and international markets.
