This photo was taken in Josefina C.O.’s business. She’s a member of the Mujeres Audaces (Daring Women) communal bank located in the Mexican state of Puebla. We can see her merchandise in the photo. She is a clothing merchant, a business she started 13 years ago.

She is asking for funds to invest in the clothing sales business but she is also thinking about starting to sell groceries. People like her very much and recognize her as a hard working person. At present, she is stocking both kinds of items in the same location.

At the moment of requesting the loan she is very excited because she feels that this will make it possible for her to invest more in her business and be able to fill all her pending orders from customers on time.

She is 38 years old and finished 9th grade. She’s married and has three children, two girls and one boy.

She wants this loan so that in the future she can have a separate location for each type of business. She hopes that with combined profits from both businesses she will be able to add on to her home.

The Group has 10 members who are:

Maricela M.M. Pastry sales.
Sandra Rosario C.C. Chicken sales.
Cristina V.O. Soft drinks sales.

Evelia N.P. Clothing sales.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
