Meja's story

After several years of being unemployed, Meja, who is a lab technician, launched an enterprise in 2019 to offer money-transfer services via Airtel-Money. He began with bit of capital from a health center where he used to work.

Today, his family's living conditions are improving somewhat. And he is requesting a loan to increase his business and improve his living conditions further. In the photo, he appears with his wife.

Après plusieures années de chômage, Meja , qui est un laboratin de profession, à partir d'un petit montant reçu dans un centre de santé où il était employé, a entrepris le service de transfert d'argent à travers airtel-money et celà c'est depuis 2019.Maintenant les conditions de vie de sa famille s'améliore tant soit peu et il sollicite le prêt pour augmenter son activité et améliorer d'avantage ses conditions de vie.Il est accompagné de son épouse sur la photo.

This loan supports small businesses in the Lake Kivu region of DR Congo, where many families have relocated to escape violence elsewhere. By supporting this loan, you are helping to empower people in Eastern Congo to start their own businesses and provide for themselves and their families.

APR calculated using a 12 month $800 loan, 36% annual declining interest rate, $2 fee ($4 for first loans, so chose $2 to reflect variety of first & future cycle loans on Kiva) & 0.5% fee.

In countries without land line phones, credit cards, and ATM machines, then electronic money, that is putting cash on your phone, allows folks to pay without traveling. This is good for our climate.

Mobile money allows developing countries to skip over development steps we took. But it needs e-money vendors in every remote location as we have ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) everywhere. But for the vendor to exchange phone money for cash and vice versa require money deposited with the mobile money company.

Congo has a very fragile government. Fragile States Index reports that only four countries are more fragile than Congo DRC. The good news is it is trying to be a democracy.
