A loan of $875 helped to buy a breeding cow.

Josephine's story

Joséphine M. is a 48 year old widow who was born in Rubavu district in Rwanda's Western Province. She has little schooling, but she can read and write. She has four children; the oldest is 27 and the youngest is 13. Two of her children have been to high school.

This is a family that lives from agriculture and raising cattle. They have a good location near Kivu lake where there is always pasture even during the dry season. Mrs. M. received a loan from Amasezerano Community Banking in 2009 to buy a cow of a better breed. Thanks to her investment, she has paid the tuition fees for her two children and put flooring in her house, which had a dirt floor before. She hopes to acquire 10 better breed cows in the future because these are more profitable than local cows and produce milk, which improves nutrition. The return on this investment will allow her to support the other two children who are still in school.
