Most of the Mayan women in the rural state of Sololá continue to speak their original language K'iche and to wear traditional clothing. Among them is Catarina, a married woman, 56 years of age, and the mother of three children with ages between 30 and 35 years. She had six years of formal education, and her children graduated from school.
She aims to help her husband with household expenses through the sale of typical clothing. Catarina feels motivated to offer her traditional fabrics to neighbors in the community and also in the local market. To capitalize her business, Catarina is requesting her second Kiva loan, with which she will be able to buy typical belts, skirts, blouses, and aprons wholesale.
There are seven women in the communal bank "Emmanuel". They have the goal of adding capital to their businesses which include textiles, food sales, convenience stores, and raising animals.
Catarina and her companions will benefit from the “Microcrédito Plus” program's loans, informal education, and health services. They will receive training in finance, health, women's issues, and family. This training is an important tool towards the women's success in their businesses. Catarina and the others also will learn about the importance of wearing masks, washing hands frequently, and using antibacterial gel.
Thank you to the Kiva lenders for joining in the development of these women.
In this group: Juana, Maria, Catarina, Julia, Maria Natalia , Catarina , Ana Estela
