Maria Cleofe's story

Maria Cleofe is from Ayacucho. She is a 51 year old married woman with four children; three are living on their own and one is still dependent on her. Maria Cleofe’s main occupation is selling meals in her own restaurant which is called “Tres Marias”. It is located in the barrio of Luis Vallejo Santoni in the district of Santiago. (The district of Santiago in Cusco is one of the areas where the inhabitants manage to have their own businesses despite their low-income status). Maria Cleofe has been doing this type of work for 25 years. At 5:00 in the morning, she begins preparing the meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and finishes her work at 9:00 in the evening every day. Currently, she has a cook and an employee who help her with the work. Some days she delivers meals to construction sites. Maria Cleofe is a member of the “Kantu” communal bank and is requesting the loan to buy more supplies such as rice, sugar, noodles, etc. Her dream is to open a restaurant near the Plaza de Armas in Cusco.
