A loan helped to buy a multi-kilo bag of kava roots from the island of Epi to process its juice into a beverage to sell.

Isabelle's story

Isabelle lives in a rural district just ten minutes’ drive from Port Vila's international airport. She is 35 years old and the mother of two beautiful children aged seventeen and fourteen years. She lives with her unemployed partner and children in their own home. Her small community’s main means of support is through farming, but it has been hard during this COVID-19 pandemic for one to maintain a stable income.

Isabelle has asked for a loan to help her buy a multi-kilo bag of kava roots from the island of Epi so she can process its juice into a drink to sell to her valued customers. Kava is a traditional beverage that is drunk during special ceremonies but also in social settings after a hard day’s work.

Isabelle has now been in business for over four years and has a cousin helping her run it. She has been with SPBD Vanuatu for over three years. This is her fourth loan, and she has been faithful in repaying her previous ones on time. Through her loans, Isabelle feels motivated to expand her business and become a successful entrepreneur.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
