A loan helped to buy certified seeds and high-nutrient fertilizer to help a single mom who is an icon of success in her area improve her corn crop farming.

Betty's story

Betty is a 29-year-old single mother of four school-going children, with clear-cut goals, who has learned life’s most important lessons through struggles. As a single mum and a key breadwinner of her family, which includes both aging parents and children, she farms a small plot of land in the green, lush hills of Litein, in the Rift Valley region of Kenya.

In Kenya, the jobs that are accessible to uneducated and unskilled people do not provide liveable wages. After deriving profit from her first harvest, Betty felt encouraged and elevated to invest more in agribusiness. Through agriculture, she has made her life meaningful, and she feels she is now deriving maximum pleasure.

She is seeking a loan of 50,000 KES that she will use to buy certified seeds and high-nutrient fertilizer to expand her corn crop farm. By scaling up her business, she will relatively reduce production costs and increase output.

Her strategy is to use the returns from the investment to pay for more farm inputs, the lack of which is a major problem that leads to many farms closing due to poor quantity and quality of yields. She will therefore be able to increase her profit. This will elevate her standard of living and that of her beautiful children.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
