A loan helped support a transitional housing program for low income, homeless individuals and families.

Chanelle's story

My name is Chanelle R. and I am a professional mental health counselor residing in Detroit, Michigan. I am passionate about giving others the opportunity for stable housing, a fresh start, healthy living, and empowerment. As a young girl, I was raised by a single mother who moved me and my siblings from Staten Island, New York to Muskegon, Michigan. I witnessed how my mother had struggled with bills, housing, preparing food to stretch and feed the bellies of her children. Also, experiencing the back and forth between shelters and community rescue missions due to living in poverty without a strong support system. There were days where my siblings and I didnt eat our first meal until the late afternoon or evening. However, Im a strong believer that life takes you through journeys for not just our own experience but for others facing the same circumstances. Im passionate about advocating, and counseling individuals and families through empowerment, support, and program development. During this pandemic, I have received numerous calls from women with children who are looking for temporary shelter with no other options available due to the majority of the transitional housing program already were full. I understood there was a need and so I purchased a residential property in September 2020 thats currently under renovation to assist the need of the community during this trying time.
