A loan helped a member to buy a freezer, purified water, seasonal fruit, glasses, flavorings, sugar, and other ingredients for her icy confections.

Las Empoderadas Group's story

On a warm day, a flavorful, cold icy confection like a slushie is tempting! One made with seasonal tropical fruits would be especially hard to resist! Selena, a 26-year-old married mother of three children, ages 4-10, makes mouth-watering slushies with shaved ice. She lives in the department/state of Solola, which is a popular tourist destination. Both residents and travelers are drawn to her icy confections!

Selena is requesting a loan to buy a freezer, purified water, seasonal fruit, glasses, flavorings, sugar, and other ingredients for her slushies. She will use her profits to cover household expenses and educate her children.

Selena, along with six of her friends, is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank Las Empoderadas Group or “The Empowered Ones”. Members meet monthly, make loan payments and participate in educational training sessions that are designed by a facilitator. Presentations are drawn from business, health, family, and women's topics. Emphasis is placed on how to navigate the pandemic with social distancing, wearing masks and practicing good hygiene. The ladies also learn about prioritizing expenses, women’s rights/roles and self esteem/empowerment. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education and health care “Microcredit Plus”.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for the essential role you play in the lives of Selena and her friends!
