A loan of $3,275 helps a member to buy traditional fabrics, lining, glue, leather and thread to use in making sandals to sell.

Alfareras Group's story

Gloria, a 32-year-old married mother of three children (ages two to 12), graduated with a teaching certificate but never obtained a job. She has earned a living making and selling sandals in the department/state of Totonicapan, where she lives.

Her business is growing and more and more customers are placing orders for the finely-made leather sandals. She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy traditional fabrics, lining, glue, leather, and thread. She shares that with increased income she will be able to earn more and support her older son, who she hopes will graduate from high school!

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Alfareras” is made up of eight lively women who sell basic grains, raise animals, fabricate clothing and traditional textiles, and have shoe businesses. Their monthly meetings allow them to support each other, make loan payments, and participate in educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare services.

Topics are relevant to the lives of the ladies and include information about health, women’s issues, family matters, and business. Every other month, the ladies have access to basic health care services. Health education and services are provided by a visiting nurse who is fluent in the Maya language of the ladies.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for the kind and generous role you play in the lives of Gloria and her friends. They are most appreciative!
