A loan helped to purchase flour, cooking oil, yeast, and sugar in order to bake more donuts and increase her income.

Maria's story

Maria is a 62-year-old mother of five. Her children are all grown up with their own families. Her husband is retired and helps her with her business. She lives with her husband and children in their own home located just 10 minutes from Port Vila's international airport. Maria's community is quite large, and the main industry is agriculture. It has been hard to earn a stable income because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Maria has requested a loan to purchase flour, cooking oil, yeast, and sugar, which she will use to produce more donuts to sell to her valuable customers. Maria wants to make more donuts because school is about to start. This will help to improve her revenue, which she will use to complete her unfinished home. Currently, as school hasn't started yet, Maria is selling cigarettes to earn income. She wants to open a storefront so she can sell her donuts inside.

This is Maria's second loan with South Pacific Business Development (Vanuatu) Ltd. She has successfully repaid her loan on time. Through her loans, Maria feels motivated to expand her business and become a successful businesswoman.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
