A loan of $4,375 helps a member to buy bananas, melons, papayas and pineapple.

Las Manzanas Xepol Group's story

A wide variety of colorful and delicious tropical fruit is artfully displayed for sale in roadside stands and marketplaces throughout Guatemala. Lucia, a 46-year-old married mother of eight children (5-20 years) is a fruit seller in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. She shares that because she came from a large family, her parents were unable to afford to send her to school. Lucia understands the tremendous value of education and has saved funds to send her five older children through the sixth grade. The rest are still in school. Her husband is a day laborer and contributes to household and educational expenses as well. Lucia sells her fruit in two nearby markets and is requesting her fifth Kiva loan. She will be able to buy bananas, melons, papayas and pineapple.

Lucia looks forward to the monthly meetings of her Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Manzanas Xepol”. There are seven ladies in the group who participate in educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. Topics are relevant to their lives and are drawn from four areas: health, family, women, business. Lucia says, “ I share what I learn from the training with my family and my neighbors. In addition, I put into practice the advice that we are given.” The women have access to basic health care services every other month.

Lucia and the six other ladies in the Trust Bank send their gratitude to Kiva investors! Thank you!

In this group: Tomasa, Maria, Lucia, Sebastiana , Marta , Lucia , Maria Magdalena
