A loan of $2,775 helps a member to buy corn, firewood, straw baskets and utility cloths.

Margaritas Sakacultecas Group's story

Delicious, freshly made corn tortillas are in great demand in rural areas of Guatemala. They are made in “tortillerias” or small tortilla shops three times daily. This is what 25-year-old Manuela does to earn income. She is married and has been unable to conceive. Her husband is a “tuk tuk” (a 3-wheeled taxi) driver and has two that he maintains. They save some of their income in the hopes that they will be able to have children one day. Manuela’s tortilla business is growing; for this reason, she is requesting her first Kiva loan. She plans to buy corn, firewood, straw baskets and traditional utility cloths.

Manuela finds great support in her Friendship Bridge trust bank, Margaritas Sakacultecas, in the department/state of Quiche. There are 6 other ladies in the group, who raise animals, have convenience stores and prepared-food businesses, and sell personal care products via catalog sales. They meet monthly to make loan payments and participate in educational sessions that are vital to their success. The topics range from health, hygiene, nutrition and navigating through the pandemic to effective business-management practices. Every 2 months, they have access to basic health care services and exams. This combination of loans, education and health care is called Microcredit Plus.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for the vital role you are playing in the lives of Manuela and her friends! They are stepping into a brighter future with your support!
