A loan of $5,025 helps a member to buy fabric, thread and accessories to make traditional blouses.

Mujeres De Media Luna Group's story

Styles of Mayan women’s traditional clothing in Guatemala change throughout the years. Newer pieces are still colorful and quite beautiful. Maria, a 27 year old married mother of 3 children (3-8), is a seamstress. She has a small sewing workshop located in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. Maria sews and decorates popular, colorful “blusas” with all kinds of rhinestones and pearls. She has a sewing machine that is well used! Right now, she is requesting her 1st KIVA loan to buy fabric, thread and embellishments (pearls, rhinestones) for her creations. The child in the photo is the son of one of the clients.

Maria, along with 7 other Maya K’iche ladies, is a member of the Trust Bank “Mujeres de Media Luna” or “Women of the Half Moon”. They are excited to get a KIVA loan because it will really help them with their businesses that include vegetable sales, animal husbandry, seamstress shops and convenience stores. They learn about effective business management practices, as well as health, women’s issues and family matters in their monthly meetings. Because the healthcare system is very poor and often non-existent in Guatemala, Friendship Bridge launched the “Health for Life” program. Highly trained nurses deliver basic care services and offer treatment every other month. This highly effective combination of loan support, educational training and health care is called “Microcredit Plus”.

Maria and her friends are looking forward to a brighter future. Thank you, KIVA investors!
