Luka's story

Luka A. M. is forty-three years old, married, and has seven children aged between 2 & 18 years old. His business is located in a residential area in Kakamega, in the western region of Kenya. It is well known as the sugar belt region for its production of sugarcane. For the last twelve years, he has been selling items such as rice, flour, oil, detergents, and soft drinks, among others, to the local people. He says that this business is profitable, and his major challenge is debtors not paying as per their agreements. However, he works very hard to keep his business doing well. He is using his loan of KES 20,000 to buy more general items to expand his business. He hopes to be a wholesaler in the future, and to give his children a quality education. He describes himself as very hardworking, honest and humble.
