Las Amigas De Tlane (Flat) Group's story

This group is called “Las Amigas de Tlane” (The Friends of Tlane) because everyone gets along well and has known each other for a long time. There are six members of the group: Elena Espíndola, Felipa C., Felipa F., Anabel C., Maria Concepción, and Alberta Aragón. All of them are residents of the town of Tlanepantla.

Elena is 35 years old and married to Sr. Jesús Arias Espino, who is 28 years old and works as a taxi driver. They have a 1½ year old son. She also has two other daughters from her first marriage: Ana Laura Rodríguez Espíndola (age 17 and married) and Sindy Rosario Rodríguez (age 11 and lives with her paternal grandparents). For the past three years, Elena has been growing “nopales”, which are the edible leaves of the prickly pear cactus. She does not have the capital to continue farming, so she is requesting a new loan to buy cactus pads and fertilizers so that she can been producing them again. Elena also wants to set up a space outside of her house where she can sell taquitos at night so that she can earn extra income.

Most of the members are engaged in growing nopales. The loan will be used to buy organic and chemical fertilizers since they are very expensive where they live, but are essential to their production. They are satisfied with the support provided by Fundación Realidad and Kiva and express their appreciation. The members now know the action they need to take to improve their financial situation. They are thankful for the opportunity given to them and hope that the support will not end.
