The colorful traditional clothing of the Maya is prized by the wearer and admired by travelers and textile collectors from all over the world. It is unique in design and color combinations. Rocelia, a 31-year-old single entrepreneur who lives with her parents in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapan, sells traditional clothing. Thanks to her income, she is able to help her parents with household expenses. She is currently requesting her 2nd Kiva loan to buy traditional blouses/”huipiles”, skirts/”cortes” and wrap around belts/”fajas” in the latest styles and colors.
Rocelia, along with 6 other women, participates in the “Friendship Bridge Microcredit Plus” program of loans, educational trainings and healthcare services. They have formed the Trust Bank “Flor de Pasajoc” and meet monthly to make loan payments and participate in educational trainings. They learn to manage their small vegetable farms (beets, carrots, radishes), animal husbandry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, pigs) and traditional textile businesses best as they learn about effective business management practices. They also learn about family matters, women’s issues and health. They rely on each other, especially important during this time of the pandemic. Every other month, the ladies have access to healthcare services like blood pressure and exams, PAP smears and family planning consults.
