A loan of $3,500 helps a member to buy inventory for her convenience store.

Estrellas De Parracana Group's story

Small convenience stores are real lifelines in rural Guatemalan communities. During this time of the pandemic, many markets are closed or operate with reduced hours, and public transportation is not dependable.

Amalia is a 40-year-old convenience store owner with 3 years of formal education. Her husband died 16 years ago, leaving her to raise and educate 3 children who now range in age from 18-23. She shares, “I’m moving ahead with the support of my children who help me with the bookkeeping of my business.” She is requesting her 2nd Kiva loan to buy essential staples, basic grains, personal care and cleaning products.

Amalia is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Estrellas de Parracana,” located in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapan. There are 6 other ladies in the group who have little or no formal education. Their businesses range from the sale of chicken meat, small restaurants and convenience stores to traditional textile fabrication/sales. Their monthly educational sessions about effective business management practices, help them a great deal. They also learn about health, hygiene, nutrition and the use of medicinal plants. During this time of the pandemic, the women learn to advertise on social media, and the importance of wearing masks and keeping social distance. Every two months, they have access to health care. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education and healthcare “Microcredit Plus”.
