A loan of $3,025 helps a member to buy all kinds of second-hand clothing and shoes.

Nueva Generacion Group's story

Donated clothing from the United States is often packaged into bales or “pacas” and shipped to Guatemala where it is offered for sale on the street and in marketplaces. When a “paca” is to be opened, the business owner places a sign outside their business to alert customers.

Maria, a 59-year-old married mother of three children now over the age of 32, has a business selling used clothing. Her husband is a farmer and, with their combined income, each of their children had six years of formal education. Maria needs to restock inventory and is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy used tee shirts, blouses, skirts, pants, jackets and shoes. She shares that she is excited to receive a new shipment of inventory!

Maria is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Nueva Generacion” in the department/state of Chimaltenango. There are six other ladies in the group who have food businesses and sell personal-care products by catalogue. They meet monthly to make loan payments and participate in educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care. Maria shares, “Thanks to the educational sessions, my friends and I learn how to plan, invest in our business. We learn about health and hygiene. And we gain self confidence!” Every other month, they have access to health care services.

Thank you, Kiva investors! Tomorrow will be a brighter day for these ladies because of your generosity!
