A loan of $3,925 helps a member to buy more traditional clothing to replenish her inventory.

Las Mariposas Santiago Group's story

Traditional Mayan clothing is exceptionally colorful and beautiful. It has been proudly worn and treasured for centuries. Textile collectors from all parts of the world admire the intricate weaving and embroidery in the blouses/”huipiles”, skirts/”cortes”, belts/”fajas” and aprons/”delantales”.

Petronila, a 48 year old married mother of 5 children (10-25) sells these traditional textiles in 2 nearby community markets. With her income, she is able to help cover household expenses and education of her 10 year old son. The rest of her children completed 6 years of formal education. Petronilia is requesting her 1st Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of “huipiles”, “cortes”, “fajas” and “delantales”.

Petronilia is the Treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Mariposas Santiago” or “The Santiago Butterflies”. There are 6 other ladies in the group who sell fruit, traditional textiles and raise animals. Because they have little or no formal education, they benefit greatly from their monthly educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. Topics are relevant to their lives and drawn from 4 areas: health, family matters, women’s issues and business. Every other month, they have access to health care services in the “Health for Life” program (breast exams, PAP smears). This is really important as the health care system in Guatemala is very poor.
