A loan of $4,100 helps a member to buy meat, rice, oil, spices and containers.

Maravillosas Group's story

Small food stands, often set up in marketplaces or on the street, are found everywhere in Guatemala and are a viable way for families to earn income. Maria is a 28-year-old married woman with nine years of formal education. For the marketplace, she prepares her delicious recipes that are popular with her neighbors and customers. During this challenging time of the pandemic, she has been innovative and looked for other ways to advertise her menu. She does this on social media and even shares her recipes there. She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy meat, oil, rice, spices and containers.

Maria is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank's Maravillosas Group or “The Marvelous Ones” in the department/state of Suchitepequez. They sell personal care items, pork and have small food businesses. They appreciate learning how to manage their businesses best. They accomplish this in their monthly educational training sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care. They also learn about health, women’s issues and family matters. Every other month, these women have access to health care services. From both of these “plus” programs, Maria has learned about good balanced nutrition, hygiene, social distance and the importance of wearing masks.

Maria and her friends would be unable to access credit from a financial institution. Kiva investors are providing such a wonderful service to them by funding their much-needed loans. Thank you to each of you!
