A loan helped to gain access to cost-efficient hybrid seeds and fertilizer for corn crop cultivation for this woman with a good credit history.

Esther's story

Esther, a mom of 4 who was born in 1968, is very hardworking and a high-flier. She hails from a remote village in the Nyahururu area of Kenya, a town surrounded by prime agricultural lands that favour large-scale grain, dairy, and crop farming.

This area has tough living conditions, and to survive you must have tough skin. But Esther has defied all the odds and has chosen to work hard so that she can meet the requirements of her loving family. She is the only breadwinner. Esther works on her farm, growing trees and vegetables, and rearing dairy cows and poultry.

The biggest constraint to Esther's success is the use of poor-quality fertilizers and lack of pesticides and herbicide. Juhudi Kilimo has partnered with Kiva to provide financial services to smallholders around Kenya. Through these financial services, farmers now can buy productive assets and important agricultural inputs for use on their farms.

Esther is seeking this loan to buy farm inputs such as seeds and fertilizer. This loan will enable her to improve her corn crop production through use of quality farm inputs. This intervention will help her fill the increasing demand for food in the market and, in the process, generate more income to repay the loan debt and elevate the quality of life for her family.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
