A loan of $600 helped to purchase stone and raw materials to supply the mortar and pestle business.

Peang's story

Mrs. Peang S., age 47, works in the market selling mortars and pestles for grinding food, earning $3 each day. Her husband makes the mortars and pestles that she sells, carving them out of blocks of stone. They have six children, two who work in Thailand earning $8 per day together, two who assist their father in producing the mortars and pestles, and two who are students.

In order to expand their business and meet client demand, Mrs. Peang S. would like to borrow $600 to buy additional stones and materials needed to produce the mortars and pestles. Her husband is pictured here producing a mortar.
