A loan helped to start a grocery that will help supplement her farming income and support her family in this tough economic period.

Julia's story

Julia is 44 years old and lives in Kitale, a region that has a history of regular rainfall patterns that have a direct connection with good agricultural production. Julia has been supporting her family through mixed dairy and crop farming for the past few years.

The major impediment to the development of smallholder farms in Kenya is lack of short-term credit facilities. Juhudi Kilimo, in partnership with Kiva, is working hard to support smallholder farmers in Kenya by providing financing, therefore guaranteeing their survival. Julia is requesting this loan to start a grocery business that will help supplement her farming income and support her family in this tough economic period. This loan to her will be vital to achieving food security in her home during this period of economic recession.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
